Putting Degrowth into Practice: Film screening and panel discussion
Join us for a public screening of the BBC documentary "Less is More: Can Degrowth Save the World?" and conversation with director Alvaro Alvarez. After the screening we will have a panel discussion connecting the film with local Sydney and Australian initiatives to put degrowth into practice and to influence policy toward regenerative, flourishing futures.

Alvaro Alvarez is a journalist and documentary filmmaker with over 15 years of experience creating a wide range of content, from short digital videos to international documentaries. Born in Argentina and raised in Spain, Alvaro joined the BBC World Service in London in 2011 after working for the Spanish newspaper El País in Spain. Throughout his career, he has covered a variety of issues, travelling to countries such as Cuba, Mexico, Peru, China, and Egypt. In his latest documentary for the BBC, focused on "degrowth economics", he delves into the movement in Barcelona, examining both the academic aspects and the real-world efforts of those implementing degrowth principles in their daily lives. His experience with this documentary has fueled his interest in covering more stories related to climate justice and the wellbeing economy.
Chiara Di Giorgio brings her economics background and passion for sustainability to her community work. A mother of three and active member of Regen Sydney, Chiara recently joined Sydney Degrowth and champions degrowth principles through several grassroots initiatives. Chiara leads Transition Bondi's Mend & Remake and collaborates with Regen Waverley to build resilient, connected communities focused on regenerative living.
Chris Riedy is Professor of Sustainability Transformations and Associate Director Learning and Development at the Institute for Sustainable Futures, University of Technology Sydney. Chris is an action researcher with a focus on sustainability transformations. He uses sociological and political theory, narrative theory and futures thinking to design, facilitate and evaluate practical experiments in transformative change towards sustainable futures.
Nina Gbor is a circular economy & sustainable fashion educator, international speaker, researcher, clothes swap maven and eco stylist. Nina is the Director of the Circular Economy & Waste Program at The Australia Institute. She was featured in season 3 of ABC TV's award-winning environmental series, War On Waste, and was also an impact consultant on the War On Waste tv show. Nina founded Clothes Swap & Style, and has been hosting clothes swaps for over 14 years.
