Nina Gbor on The Project TV on Channel 10 talking about the state of Australia's fashion industry and waste crisis following the release of the Australian Fashion Council report.
Australia one of the highest consumers of textile waste per capita in the world, second to the US.
A few stats for context:
Australians on average buy almost 15kg of clothes every year or 56 new items every year. 84% of it ends up in landfill.
According to a report by the Australian Fashion Council, 1.42bn pieces of clothing are imported into Australia every year.
In terms of fabric or material, this comes to 373,000 tonnes of fabric
And for financial context, this import costs Australian consumers $9.2 billion dollars which comes down to $6.50 per item on average. This figure $6.50 per item is hugely problematic on so many levels: wage theft, exploitation, modern slavery, the environment, etc.
